Offense

This Eagles team, much like many other Super Bowl winning roster, was put in some tough situations this past offseason. From losing guys like Josh Sweat (Cardinals), Milton Williams (Patriots), and Darius Slay (Steelers) to FA to an important player retiring in Brandon Graham and even a important coach to their success last year, Kellen Moore leaving for a Head Coaching job (Saints). All of these losses will have their own impacts to the team but the beauty in this front office they have here, run by Howie Roseman, is they never allow losses carry over into the season.

  • You add Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari to fill at least part of the role Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham will leave in the edge room. You also have guys like Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt ready to step in after some time developing in rotational roles. The same goes for the Milton Williams loss. You have guys on the roster ready to step in like Moro Ojomo, Thomas Booker IV, and Byron Young plus you go and draft Ty Robinson out of Nebraska. All across the roster you see these subtle additions through FA and the draft that will maybe not have an immediate impact but allow them flexibility along their roster and even more importantly depth despite the huge deals they have on their books.

To get into the roster a bit more.. looking at the offense there are a few worries I have. There’s of course REAL quality talent all along this team and especially the offense with guys like Saquon Barkley, AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, Jalen Hurts, and well.. nearly all of the offensive line but my question/worry is with the depth. If Saquon were to go down you’re counting on AJ Dillon, Will Shipley, and a number of p-squad level players currently on roster. If AJ or Devonta were to go down you’re counting on Jahan Dotson, Terrance Marshall, and Johnny Wilson. While there are worse options out there I just worry about how dependent they’ll be on those injuries. Guy like Dillon/Shipley can’t even scratch what Saquon gives you out of the backfield and the same goes for guys like Terrance Marshall and Johnny Wilson.. they aren’t even close to AJ or Devonta.

  • The loss of Kellen Moore is what has me worried more and more about this issue. If HC Nick Sirianni starts to take control of this offense again I think we’ll start to see more of what we saw in 23/24 season. The Eagles became stagnant and really dependent on their superstars to be almost perfect to win games and while that can be great when you have those guys on the field it also leaves you vulnerable to one injury making you a completely different team.. also a more predictable team which is my biggest worry. When we’ve seen the Eagles at their best under Sirianni is when they have a great OC and DC. Guys like Kellen Moore and Shane Steichen as OCs and Johnathan Gannon and Vic Fangio as DCs. When those guys aren’t there all of the sudden the Eagles become predictable and don’t look nearly as sharp making them easy to game-plan for. While I’m not trying to say Kevin Patullo can’t be at that level it’s just currently an unknown and that worries me a bit because I can’t stand to see another incredibly talented team be 1 dimensional just because they can be.
  • While there are some concerns for me at WR and RB there are also some positions I think they can deal with injuries at. Funny enough one of them is the hardest to do so in the league, in QB. I think if you have to count on Tanner McKee and/or Kyle McCord to step in for a few games you’ll be able to still be competitive. They’re not Jalen Hurts but I think with good game planning you could let the rest of the talent step up around those guys like they did with Kenny Pickett last year. TE and OL are also positions I feel they can afford to have an injury here and there at. Calcaterra, Granson, and even Harrison Bryant can all play and fill in a role when needed for Goedert and as far as the OL goes… until Jeff Stoutland retires or isn’t there anymore I just can’t say I have any concern with them trotting out 5 guys that will play better than at least half the league.

Defense

Defensively they had bigger losses from a player standpoint than the offense but my concern isn’t even close on this side of the ball, if anything I think they might be better. Of course the Sweat, Williams, Slay, Graham, Gardner-Johnson Jr, and even Nakobe Dean (torn patellar tendon left knee) losses hurt but the guys they added and had waiting in the background (including keeping Fangio at DC) is just crazy.

  • Azeez Ojulari and Josh Uche will be great athletes that can fly off the ball on pass rushing downs for you and be very effective
  • Jihaad Campbell (so long as he stays healthy) will be able to step in and play along side Zach Baun immediately to fill that role while Nakobe Dean recovers
  • Kelee Ringo, Mac McWilliams, Eli Ricks, and Adoree’ Jackson will all have chances to step in and find a role on this team to replace the loss of Darius Slay. Plus you have Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean who played great football last year as rookies
  • You bring in Andrew Mukuba to fill the loss of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson Jr via trade to the Texans and in my opinion I don’t think he’ll be far off as far as his level of play goes

Overall this defense while maybe not having the same name power as last year is younger and just as talented in my opinion. You pair that youth and talent with one of the best DCs in the league, Vic Fangio, and you’ve got a real recipe for success. I think this defense, while it make take a bit and you may seem some issues early on, will take form later on in the year as they get more and more reps together in game and be even more powerful than they were last year. I think they’ll need every bit of it too considering my questions with the offense.

Overview

  • While this team certainly lost some important players to their success last year the elite front office they have in place showed just how great they are and I expect them to be right back where they were last year because of it. An incredible roster with elite talent all over the place and because of the continued success in FA and the draft more depth than they should reasonably have. While I do have questions about the offense I would be lying if I sat here and said they won’t be right back at the top of this division and conference fighting it out for a back to back Super Bowl run. Anything can happen in the playoffs so I’m not guaranteeing anything but this team has all the tools to do what they did last year and I think in some ways may even be better. If they get creative and modern play calling on the offensive side of the ball again well.. good luck to the rest of the league and have fun figuring out how to game plan against this power house of a team.
